   The Negative Way

  When an infant begins to understand

   that using the toilet is a better way

   there’s no further need for diapers. 

   when a child begins to learn

    how to balance himself on his bicycle

    there’s no further need for training wheels.

    when a cook has prepared the same dish

    many times, she no longer needs the recipe. 

    when a couple have lived together

    for many years, they no longer need

    to say, “I love you”.

    When we pray the time will come

    when we no longer need diapers

    training wheels, recipes – or words.
