The Dark Side of Intelligence
How is it possible that the only creature on earth who is
believed to have intelligence is also the only creature
on earth who knowingly poisons the soil that grows his
food, pollutes the air he needs to breathe, and uses the
waters of the sea, the rivers of the land, and the pristine
waters of lakes to dump his offal and other waste?
How is it possible that this singularly endowed
creature on planet earth also dares to replicate himself
in machines of artificial intelligence that are
so ingeniously crafted that they reflect his own image
and so cleverly designed that they bow down
before him and obey him as if he were a god?
How is it possible that this uniquely endowed creature
evolved to be the only discordant noise in the choir
of creatures throughout the known universe who sing
in unison the song of nature’s Magnificat in joyful
canticles of praise; a cosmic hymn sung from star to
star, from planet to planet, and from soul to soul?
How is it possible that this morally informed creature
allows evil to creep inside his head and deaden his heart,
darken his soul, and blind his vision while he mindlessly
watches wave after wave of gun violence against innocent
people and disavows any responsibility, while he continues
to clutch to his bosom his beloved gun in adoration?
